Description

A hands-on project book all about renewable energy for young scientists looking toward the future!

How do we heat our homes, light our rooms, and power our cars? With energy! And the type of energy we use matters to our health and the health of the planet. In Renewable Energy: Power the World with Sustainable Fuel, young scientists ages 9 to 12 learn how switching from nonrenewable energy sources to renewable ones can help make our homes, businesses, cities, and world better, healthier places. What are those renewable resources? Solar, wind, biofuel, hydro, and geothermal! Renewable energy has a long history, and recent advances in technology are changing communities around the planet, from those on tiny islands to massive countries with millions of people. Learn about which energy sources are best for different uses, and how we need to use all renewable resources available to help curb the climate crisis. Plus, gain a deep understanding of the kinds of jobs that are waiting in renewable energy fields! Hands-on projects, essential questions, links to online primary sources, and science-minded prompts to think more about energy, the environment, and the repercussions of our choices make this book a key addition to classrooms and libraries. Additional materials include a glossary, a list of media for further learning, a selected bibliography, and index. All books are leveled for Guided Reading level and Lexile and align with Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. All titles are available in paperback, hardcover, and ebook formats.

Critical Reviews

Always in the Middle...

"It's an interactive, easy to read journey beginning with an informative Introduction followed by 6 chapters. Great learning experiences throughout. Future scientists will love this title along with anyone else who usually finds science not to their liking."

Booklist
"The amazing potential of the resources all around us . . . take center stage in this project-based STEAM resource from the Build it Yourself series. The book is an exciting read, not just because of the future potential for alternative energy sources, but also because of the existent, real-world success stories of wind farms, hydroelectric dams, and solar panels."

Praise for a previous edition of Renewable Energy

School Library Journal
"Owing to an overreliance on fossil fuels, the need for renewable energy has become urgent. Examining the benefits and trade-offs of solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, wave, and biofuel energy, this work offers information and hands-on projects. A useful addition for larger collections with students studying renewable energy sources."
