Critical Reviews
Featuring a variety of authors and illustrators, the History Tipsters series uses a lively graphic-novel format to introduce common topics in American history. Each volume conveys content through a mix of cartoon panels, informational text boxes, speech bubbles, and infographics. While anachronistic elements and jokes will engage young readers, the books are respectful when presenting such difficult subjects as slavery and Native American displacement, and they include perspectives of women, Native Americans, enslaved people, and other marginalized groups. In Fight for a Nation Torn Apart, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman offer narration about the Civil War, focusing on slavery as its root cause and its key battles. In Head Off into the Sunset, Thomas Jefferson, Betsy Ross, and Sacajawea provide running commentary--with help from Jefferson's iPad--to explain Westward Expansion, land seizure from Native Americans, and the creation of new states in the process. Spill the Tea on the U.S. Revolution uses a mock boxing match between King George III and George Washington to keep score of the battles and discuss America's Declaration of Independence. Tell All About Colonial America describes the settlement of each of the original 13 colonies and the effect of colonization on Native Americans. A concluding section recognizes the time period's impact on America's history.--Angela Leeper "Booklist"
