This is my story - the story of a girl who was, and still is, broken. For years, I kept my past a secret, afraid of being judged - or worse, blamed. Our past does not define our future, but silence can destroy us.
The Girl Who Kept Breathing is proof that even in the darkest moments - when it feels impossible to survive - we can. I wrote this book because someone out there - maybe you - needs to know you're not alone.
If you've ever felt broken, forgotten, neglected, or as if the very air has been stolen from your lungs, I hope these words remind you that there is always another breath, another way forward - as a survivor, not a victim.

"I found The Girl Who Kept Breathing absolutely heartbreaking and well-written, and I could not stop reading. I wanted the abuse to end for this little girl who came into the world to the wrong parents by no fault of her own. This very personal story is laid out chronologically from age four to fourteen. Misty Nesbitt shows through dialogue her interactions with her parents and various other adults, and how she was overlooked and forgotten. Her character matures at a faster rate than what might be considered normal for a child because of the abuse. The theme of the memoir is suitable for mature readers and helps to highlight signs that we, as a society, need to be aware of and look for. I hope there might be another book coming from Ms. Nebitt that will cover her later teen years. If so, I look forward to its release." -Kitty A Bergen for Readers' Favorite
