About the Author
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, and naturalist best known for his book "Walden," which chronicles his experiment in simple living at Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts. A leading transcendentalist, Thoreau explored themes of self-reliance, nature, and individual conscience. His essay "Civil Disobedience," written after he refused to pay taxes to protest slavery and the Mexican-American War, profoundly influenced later civil rights leaders including Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
