Description

"A grand retelling that's refreshingly well-paced and sure to circulate in all libraries." --School Library Journal

In this new fairy tale mash-up from author David Sherrin, Big Bad Wolf helps the prince find the courage to embrace his inner self.

Everyone in town was buzzing with anticipation for the royal masquerade ball--except Wolf. He doesn't like treats, or costumes, or parties. He would rather crash the party and ruin it. Wolf disguises himself and goes to the ball, but before he can reveal himself and scare everyone, he meets the prince.

The prince is tired of royal life. He's not allowed to dance, eat dessert, or even dress up for his own costume party! He is supposed to be good all the time. What a nightmare!

Wolf abandons his plan to scare everyone and instead helps the prince disguise himself as a normal boy, and that's when they have some real fun together. Pulling pranks and eating plenty of treats, the prince can finally be himself without the pressure to be perfect. Turns out that a big bad wolf is just the friend the prince needed.

Critical Reviews

"In this fairy tale mash-up, the Big Bad Wolf doesn't want to go to the masquerade ball like Cinderella unless he can cause some trouble. This lone wolf leaves his taxes, dresses up like a granny, and goes to the party to cause trouble. By the end of the night, he may have made a new friend. This fresh play on Cinderella is lighthearted and redefines happily ever after to include the age-appropriate choice of friendship. The contrast between the bad wolf and the good prince creates a hint of conflict, though the story lacks much character growth. Having male main characters who try on costumes, play pranks, and enjoy eating can draw in boys whose perspectives in fairy tales are sparse. The allusions to the three little pigs, Cinderella, and Goldilocks will please readers with background knowledge of fairy tales. The inclusion of bigger and more unfamiliar words will help expand vocabulary. The illustrations highlight the fashion sense of the target audience in a joyful albeit zany manner. This modern fairy tale is inclusive, upbeat, and high-interest. The plot does resolve quickly with minimal conflict; however, the flip side of this is that the story reads briskly and collapses the complications of miscommunication that slow down other versions. VERDICT A grand retelling that's refreshingly well-paced and sure to circulate in all libraries."
