Description

A unifying narrative for divided times, BENT TOWARD JUSTICE tells the story of Murray Schwartzman, a Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust and escaped to America. But while Schwartzman may have found respite from external conflict in his peaceful and supportive American Jewish community, he faces a new internal upheaval. An encounter with an apparently anti-Semitic doctor forces Schwartzman to confront his beliefs about Palestinians being the enemy of the Jewish people.

Martin Luther King Jr. believed the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice. BENT TOWARD JUSTICE embodies that theme with a story about a morally passionate man who begins to question his beliefs, leading him to discover he is guilty of the kind of prejudice that he so fervently despised. This story examines what it means to see people as the "other"; it challenges the reader to see past our biases and find our shared humanity.

Audiobook read by Ed Asner.

Critical Reviews

"An endearingly human and warm-hearted memoir of Jewish identity and the realities of Israel-Palestine."

-Peter Beinart, The Crisis of Zionism

"BENT TOWARD JUSTICE brings to life the sometimes messy, often beautiful truth that people are capable of change. Grounded in the Jewish experience of the Holocaust, Feldman's narrative elucidates cherished Jewish values that we don't always live up to. These explorations of Tikkun Olam, healing the world, and of justice, equality, and dignity for every person, represent what I find most precious in Jewish traditions."

-Ari Wohlfeiler, Deputy Director, Jewish Voice for Peace

"Feldman's book is eye-opening to what an alternative future on this land could hold for both Palestinians and Israelis. He made me aware of a Jewish perspective that can be transformed through education and encountering Palestinians on the ground."

-Bshara Nassar, Founder of the Museum of the Palestinian People
