Critical Reviews

Bats are some of the most misunderstood and underappreciated creatures in the animal kingdom. With over 1,300 species of bats in the world, these flying mammals are responsible for managing a significant proportion of the insect population with their nightly feedings. They range in size and appearance, and though some people may fear them, bats rarely interact with humans and are dramatically important to the global ecosystem. This nonfiction picture book is particularly well suited to elementary school readers with an interest in bats. A table of contents and extensive back matter support the rest of the book, offering readers the opportunity to continue their learning, if desired. The narrative-style text guides readers to imagine themselves in the vicinity of bats before providing more detailed information about these creatures. Facts about bats are also inserted with frequency, and the straightforward and succinct writing style informs young readers without feeling overwhelming. Full-color photographs accompany the text and bring bats directly into readers' minds as their knowledge increases. These images are detailed and often provide a close-up view of bats, permitting readers to examine these creatures more closely than they could in life. Activity suggestions are included, encouraging kids to better understand and support bat conservation wherever they happen to live. VERDICT Engaging, dynamic, and filled with bat facts, this nonfiction picture book is a strong addition to library collections.--Mary Lanni "School Library Journal"

An introduction to the bat clan, from the 16-inch flying foxes to the one-inch Kitti's hog-nosed bat. Lukidis' methodical descriptions of bat anatomy, behavior, select species, diets, and habitats adequately fill in the informational background, but the high-quality stock photos will likely prove the stronger draw here--even with the distinctly underwhelming close-up of a vampire bat lapping away at a nicked but antiseptically clean chicken toe. Featuring shots of the animals resting in natural settings and head-on views of them in flight, the pictures allow close examinations of creepy faces beneath huge ears and add plenty of visual impact to the overall message that these creatures merit study as both significant checks on insect populations and as indicator species that provide early signs of environmental changes. The author tucks in instructions for a homemade demonstration of echolocation, provides worrisome observations about habitat loss and the devastating effects of the fungal disease called white-nose syndrome, and concludes with ways of making a more bat-friendly backyard and a list of online and print resources. A visually arresting addition to the shelf of bat books. (glossary, index) (Nonfiction. 7-9)-- "Kirkus Reviews"
