Originally invented in the 1600s, cribbage became very popular with sailors (especially in the mid-1900s). During World War II, American submarine crews on long voyages became avid cribbage players. Admiral Richard O'Kane was once dealt a perfect hand in a cribbage game - and his lucky cribbage board has been passed down by generations of submarine captains.
You can embrace the modern tradition of cribbage by learning the simple and compelling rules of the game. All you need to play is a friend (or a group of friends), a deck of cards, and a cribbage board (a board with 121 holes and pegs for each player).
With this easy-to-understand guidebook, you can quickly pick up the basics of the game, including pegging, counting, and "quick counting." You'll learn about the "perfect 29," how to win with 121 points, and how to "skunk" your opponents. You'll find out how to use the "crib" (the namesake of the game) to your advantage - both as the dealer and a non-dealer. This book even offers sneaky tactics for experienced players, such as using "muggins" to keep your opponents honest and earn more points!
When you read How to Play Cribbage, you'll discover a special bonus chapter which describes Captain's Cribbage, a variant of 3-person cribbage. Ranunculus: Beautiful Varieties for Home and Garden
A centuries-old flower of love has claimed its place in high-end floral shops and wedding bouquets.
"Consumers now understand that this flower has a great vase life and comes in many different colors. In addition, the available varieties have seen some big improvements in the last years." -- Floral Daily, October 2021
In the language of flowers, ranunculus (aka buttercup) is a symbol of seduction, charm, and attractiveness. It was particularly popular for bouquets in the Victorian era and has made a strong comeback as a bloom for modern-day wedding bouquets. It is the flower of the moment, as gardeners, florists, and alpine enthusiasts all over the world embrace the possibilities of this plant once more. From the wild plants of the high mountains to species that thrive in pond margins or flourish in fast-flowing streams; from the familiar golden flower of lawn and meadow to the most popular cultivated forms, buttercups are variable. And though some seem impossibly delicate, many are excellent garden plants.
This guide delves into a genus that is widespread and intriguing. Florists' ranunculus, with their sumptuous, layered, tissue-paper petals and myriad colors are prized as an early season alternative to roses and peonies.

On Flowers: Lessons from an Accidental Florist
Named a Best Gift Book of the Year by InStyle, Real Simple, Better Homes & Gardens, and the Wall Street Journal "If coffee tables could make . . . wish lists, [this book] would certainly be on them."
--Better Homes & Gardens A singular, personal celebration of the beauty and possibilities of nature Amy Merrick is a rare and special kind of artist who uses flowers to help us see the familiar in a completely new way. Her gift is to revel in the unexpected--like a sunny spring arrangement housed in a paper coffee cup--and to overturn preconceptions, whether she's transforming a bouquet of supermarket carnations into a breathtaking centerpiece or elevating wild and weedy blooms foraged from city sidewalks. She uses the beauty that is waiting to be discovered all around us--in leaves, branches, seedpods, a fallen blossom--to tell a story of time and place. Merrick begins On Flowers with a primer containing all her hard-won secrets on the art of flower arranging, from selecting materials to mastering pleasing proportions. Then she brings readers along on her journey, with observations on flowers in New York City and at her family's summer home in rural New Hampshire, working on a flower farm off the coast of Washington State, and studying ikebana in a jewel-box flower shop in Kyoto. We learn how to send flowers like a florist, and how to arrange them like a farm girl. We discover the poignancy in humble wildflowers, and also celebrate the luxury of fragrant blousy blooms. Collected here is an anthology of floral inspiration, a love letter to nature by an exceptional, accidental florist. -

All That Happiness Is: Some Words on What Matters
Our society is obsessed with achievement. Young people are pushed toward the next test or the "best" grammar school, high school, or college they can get into. Adults push themselves toward the highest-paying, most prestigious jobs, seeking promotions and public recognition. As Adam Gopnik points out, the result is not so much a rat race as a rat maze, with no way out. Except one: to choose accomplishment over achievement. Achievement, Gopnik argues, is the completion of the task imposed from outside. Accomplishment, by contrast, is the end point of an engulfing activity one engages in for its own sake. From stories of artists, philosophers, and scientists to his own fumbling attempts to play Beatles songs on a guitar, Gopnik demonstrates that while self-directed passions sometimes do lead to a career, the contentment that flows from accomplishment is available to each of us. A book to read and return to at any age, All That Happiness Is offers timeless wisdom against the grain. -

Between Us: How Cultures Create Emotions
"How are you feeling today?" We may think of emotions as universal responses, felt inside, but in Between Us, acclaimed psychologist Batja Mesquita asks us to reconsider them through the lens of what they do in our relationships, both one-on-one and within larger social networks. From an outside-in perspective, readers will understand why pride in a Dutch context does not translate well to the same emotion in North Carolina, or why one's anger at a boss does not mean the same as your anger at a partner in a close relationship. By looking outward at relationships at work, school, and home, we can better judge how our emotions will be understood, how they might change a situation, and how they change us.
Brilliantly synthesizing original psychological studies and stories from peoples across time and geography, Between Us skillfully argues that acknowledging differences in emotions allows us to find common ground, humanizing and humbling us all for the better.

Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness: Practices for Safe and Transformative Healing
From elementary schools to psychotherapy offices, mindfulness meditation is an increasingly mainstream practice. At the same time, trauma remains a fact of life: the majority of us will experience a traumatic event in our lifetime, and up to 20% of us will develop posttraumatic stress. This means that anywhere mindfulness is being practiced, someone in the room is likely to be struggling with trauma.
At first glance, this appears to be a good thing: trauma creates stress, and mindfulness is a proven tool for reducing it. But the reality is not so simple.
Drawing on a decade of research and clinical experience, psychotherapist and educator David Treleaven shows that mindfulness meditation--practiced without an awareness of trauma--can exacerbate symptoms of traumatic stress. Instructed to pay close, sustained attention to their inner world, survivors can experience flashbacks, dissociation, and even retraumatization.
This raises a crucial question for mindfulness teachers, trauma professionals, and survivors everywhere: How can we minimize the potential dangers of mindfulness for survivors while leveraging its powerful benefits?
Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness offers answers to this question. Part I provides an insightful and concise review of the histories of mindfulness and trauma, including the way modern neuroscience is shaping our understanding of both. Through grounded scholarship and wide-ranging case examples, Treleaven illustrates the ways mindfulness can help--or hinder--trauma recovery.
Part II distills these insights into five key principles for trauma-sensitive mindfulness. Covering the role of attention, arousal, relationship, dissociation, and social context within trauma-informed practice, Treleaven offers 36 specific modifications designed to support survivors' safety and stability. The result is a groundbreaking and practical approach that empowers those looking to practice mindfulness in a safe, transformative way.
