Description

To catch a killer who knows her secrets, magician Lucy Moon must perform the most dangerous trick of her life--discovering who she really is.

ZIGZAG GIRL is a noir-tinged feminist thriller where The Prestige meets Knives Out in Atlantic City's haunted magic underworld. When magician Lucy Moon finds her best friend murdered inside the infamous sawing box that killed a performer decades ago--a black rose in her mouth, the same signature from Lucy's buried past--she's thrust into a deadly game of deception. To unmask a killer who knows her secrets, Lucy must navigate shadowy criminal networks, confront an unsolved 1940s murder, and perform the most dangerous trick of her life: discovering who she really is.

Critical Reviews

A must-read whodunnit in which illusion, misdirection and motive are cleverly intertwined.... A propulsive, psychologically rich murder mystery that pairs a striking premise with a heroine whose insight and vulnerability shape every turn of the investigation. Don't miss it. -- "BestThrillers.com"

A mystery that understands how easily a performance can become a crime--and how dangerous it is to confuse the two.-- "Kirkus Reviews"

ZIGZAG GIRL is a tremendously original and engaging novel, a deft sleight of hand with a main character, Lucy Moon, I fell for hard and fast.

--Lou Berney, Edgar Award-winning author of CROOKS

Ruth Setton's ZIG ZAG GIRL is everything a wonderful book is supposed to be: magical, suspenseful, and completely unpredictable. Part ghost story, part murder mystery, ZIG ZAG GIRL a breathtaking example of what a fine writer can do with a cast of great characters and a tale more than worthy of them.--Gar Anthony Haywood, author of IN THINGS UNSEEN

Ruth Knafo Setton's novel, Zig Zag Girl is a gorgeously written magical rollercoaster ride through the heart of Atlantic City. When magician Lucy Moon discovers the body of her best friend in a sawing box on stage during a live performance, she is determined to find the killer. What follows is a suspenseful mystery full of heart-stopping action, a sexy whodunit, with magic at its core. Setton creates a cast of characters you can't help falling in love with, from the beautiful and spunky, Lucy Moon to the mysterious Elvis Jones. Told in the best noir style worthy of Dashiell Hammett's Sam Spade, Setton brings to life the world of magic and the dedicated magicians who perform on the stages of Atlantic City. Setton's sleight-of-hand seamlessly takes us from the boardwalk's gritty present to the traumatic war years. Haunted by memory and the ghosts of her own past, Lucy Moon must navigate these realms to discover the truth about herself and her friend's killer. Early in the novel Lucy explains, "Magic is the stories we tell." To the very end, Setton keeps us guessing and gives us the best magic of all, a story that reveals the life altering power of love and friendship.--Zeeva Bukai, author of The World Between

Filled with bluff, illusion and misdirection ZigZag Girl is a twisting mystery with a thrilling magical edge. Ruth Knafo Setton brings the community of magicians to a vivid life, with plenty of tricks and performances that not only bring the story to life but also help to destabilize the reader. The addition of magic to the mystery made me question everything as Lucy questions everything, which meant the story kept me guessing. The addition of the second narrative perspective, teasing us with insight into the killer as we try to figure out his identity. The final chapters come to a thrilling yet satisfying conclusion. Much like a magic trick, ZigZag Girl intrigues, and confounds its audience before providing the grand reveal. A cleverly plotted mystery that is a magic trick in its own right. -- "Love Reading"

ZIGZAG GIRL is a savvy contemporary urban mystery featuring the Lucy Moon, a talented performing magician with a hidden past. When one of her friends is murdered, she investigates, only to find more death and dangerous suspects. Lucy has to enlist the help of fellow female magicians and mystics to reveal the killer, before she becomes the next disappearing act! A fast-paced investigative saga with a bold, vivacious heroine, ZIGZAG GIRL is a delight for connoisseurs of modern mysteries, highly recommended.-- " Midwest Book Review"

Packed with suspense, romance, a wonderful cast of characters and deep, dark family secrets, ZIGZAG GIRL is a truly magical read. I couldn't put it down!--Alison Gaylin USA Today and International bestselling author of WE ARE WATCHING

Ruth Knafo Setton's ZIGZAG GIRL is provocative and compelling, a work of fierce imagination. It sweeps the reader up in the uncanny magic of Atlantic City and the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Lucy Moon is a character for the ages.--William Boyle, author of SAINT OF THE NARROWS STREET

Action-packed and thrilling, but it's the extraordinary cast that really make this sing. Pure magic.--Sarah Hilary, author of BLACK THORN
