Gillian has always written with a deep understanding of what makes tension work, and this book is proof. It's romantic in that achy, gothic, slow-build way, with two main characters I actually like (which is a feat in and of itself, I rarely genuinely care about a mmc). This might be my favorite story Gillian has written! The premise alone had me hooked. Vampires banned from drinking live blood, black-market dens, and a mysterious immortal admirer Hell yes! But what really sucked me in once I started reading was the gothic and dangerous world brought to life by writing so atmospheric it practically drips off the page. I could see the flicker of candlelight and hear the echo of footsteps in shadowed alleys. I was so immersed in the story that it felt like I was there.
