Michael loves music and is ready to start piano lessons. Michael can't read music because he is blind. His piano teacher uses a different approach to teach Michael how to play. Michael can't wait for the big recital so he can show off his new skills! Based on the real-life experiences of author Kristin Smedley's oldest son, this early chapter book also features illustrations by artist Kim Crothers, who is visually impaired.

Michael loves music and sports--and does things a little differently because he's blind. In this series, he walks the dog with a cane, rides his bike in the driveway, switches from beep baseball (with beeping balls and vibrating bases) to regular baseball with his friends, takes his first piano lesson, and even learns to surf. Written by a mother of two blind sons, this early chapter book series emphasizes that blind children can do everything sighted children can--they just do it their own way. Each book begins with a list of key vocabulary, an introduction to Michael, and a short explanation of Braille along with the Braille alphabet. With three short chapters and frequent colorful illustrations, these books are ideal for newly independent readers. VERDICT A thoughtful and engaging series that centers a blind protagonist. Recommended for purchase, especially for building diverse collections.-- "School Library Journal"
