The Noise War: How to Find the Truth When Everything Is Lying to You is a field manual for a world where facts are under siege and lies travel faster than light. Written by veteran national security correspondent J.J. Green, it distills two decades of frontline reporting from Kabul to Kyiv, from the Pentagon to the digital frontiers of influence warfare, into a clear, practical guide for journalists, policymakers, educators, and citizens determined to defend truth in an era of synthetic media and algorithmic manipulation.
In 2025, when AI-generated deepfakes can spark wars, SIM farms can hijack national communications in minutes, and disinformation campaigns can fracture democracies, this book is both a warning and a weapon. It exposes how "flood the zone" tactics, once perfected by autocrats, now undermine elections, institutions, and public trust in the United States. Through vivid real-world cases, strategic analysis, and ready-to-use toolkits, The Noise War shows how to identify, contain, and neutralize disinformation before it takes root.
From pre-bunking to collective journalistic defense, from narrowing the firehose to demanding algorithmic accountability, this handbook transforms complex threats into actionable strategies. Its message is urgent and empowering: truth can still win, but only if we learn to fight for it. The Noise War equips readers to recognize manipulation, resist exhaustion, and rebuild the shared reality that democracy depends on. In a century defined by information warfare, it is not just a guidebook. It is a survival manual for the truth.

"J.J. Green is one of Washington's preeminent voices on national security, a careful and fair-minded journalist who is keenly perceptive in his analysis of security threats. With "The Noise War," Green has put his finger on a problem that is undermining the security of all Americans, with the potential for inflicting damage on a scale greater than any terrorist group ever dreamed of achieving."
Joby Warrick, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and veteran Washington Post national security reporter
J.J. Green's The Noise War is to the battle for truth what Sun Tzu's The Art of War was to strategy - a timeless field manual for navigating conflict. In an age where misinformation moves faster than facts and algorithms amplify falsehoods, this book gives journalists, leaders, and citizens the tactical clarity we desperately need.

If you care about the truth, this is a good time to read JJ Green's excellent handbook, The Noise War. Green provides insight into how and why the flood of disinformation exists, and he gives practical approaches any citizen can use to innoculate themselves against it. A key part of the mission of the League of Women Voters is to empower voters, primarily by ensuring they have accurate information about candidates, issues, and election processes. This book gives us a clearer understanding of the current information landscape which helps us think about how to educate citizens. It also gives us tools to tailor the way we share information. Perhaps most important, it gives us hope!

I found The Noise War both eye-opening and genuinely useful. It doesn't just describe how disinformation spreads, it helps you recognize the patterns, understand the impact on our thinking, and respond with practical tools that build clarity instead of panic. The book is structured as a field guide, offering clear concepts, actionable guidance, and a focus on resilience for both individuals and institutions. If you want to stay informed without feeling manipulated, exhausted, or cynical, this is a smart, motivating read. Helpful for journalists, schools and universities, civic leaders, and anyone who cares about truth, trust, and democracy.

This incisive book is brimming with insights into the world of lies, manipulation, and deceit that surrounds us. It serves as an indispensable guide about how to fight the information battle, and it makes a persuasive case that all of us are soldiers on the front line of that war. This short book is a must-read in our current times.

"The Noise War" is a handbook for surviving the information battlefield.
A Chapter 4 entry, for example, "Toolkit: How to Detect the Thin Line," is exactly the gear I need every day as a working journalist to detect disinformation, and I appreciate the ways the book gives me a framework for seeing patterns, naming tactics and building resilience. Unfortunately the topic reminded me of some sad sentences that have made it into publication which I recognize as failures in U.S. journalism -but J.J. Green's manual gives me hope that I will improve along with fellow professional journalists who desperately need the shared language and strategies he provides so we can address the battle for truth. I definitely will be keeping this book on my desk especially to confront disputed data claims and recognize coordinated or bad-faith amplification.
Bridging practice and scholarship, the book also includes practical exercises that are perfect for students who are trying to figure out how to detect disinformation and learn to debunk without reinforcing false narratives. It is classroom-ready curriculum besides being a reference manual.
