Description

From hammers to hand drills to screwdrivers to saws, these fresh, invitingly illustrated poems, each highlighting a different hand tool in the shed, will engage aspiring carpenters and curious kids.

Tools are like an extra set of hands. Tools can make building, creating, and fixing things go smoothly. The right tool for a tricky job can even keep you safe. So put on your safety goggles and watch a parade of hand tools tackle some very special jobs! Smart rhymes by Hope Vestergaard and friendly pictures by David Slonim give young makers a close-up look at common tools and their amazing uses--perfectly suited for both little readers new to the subject and those whose family excursions to the local hardware store are a regular treat.

About the Author

Hope Vestergaard is a writer, educator, and curriculum specialist with several children's books to her name, including Digger, Dozer, Dumper, the companion volume to Hammers, Drills, and Wrenches. When she was eight or nine, she wrote in her journal, "When I read a good book, I feel like I'm hiding inside it, watching the story happen around me." She says this is still true today: "When I read a great book, I fall right in, and I'm oblivious to everything else." She hopes her books make young readers feel the same way. Hope Vestergaard was born in New Orleans, went to college in the Northeast, and currently lives in Michigan.

David Slonim is a fine artist and a writer and illustrator for children. He is the illustrator of Digger, Dozer, Dumper by Hope Vestergaard, The Deer Watch by Pat Lowery Collins, and Moishe's Miracle by Laura Krauss Melmed. He is also the author-illustrator of He Came with the Couch and Oh, Ducky! David Slonim lives in Indiana.

Critical Reviews

This lively overview is straightforward and engaging and will encourage young readers to dream of what they can create.
--School Library Journal

Slonim's careful illustrations provide a precise, close look at each tool. The kids' intently focused expressions suggest the seriousness of their efforts, while the tools' personalization and the two animals (a bird as well as the dog) add a note of whimsy. . . . A cute and informative small-scale construction how-to.
--Kirkus Reviews

Both educational and charming, this is a delightful introduction to basic tools and responsibility. A fun addition to any children's library.
