Description

A paradigm-shifting book about men's violence against women, how it affects us all, and what men especially can do to stop it.

Pervasive misogyny-magnified by "manosphere" figures like Andrew Tate and his many imitators-is not a fringe problem but rather a cultural crisis that crosses all lines of ethnicity, race, and socioeconomics and does enormous damage to women, girls, and men themselves. It creates an onramp to online radicalization for young men and contributes to the growing problem of violence against women in public life. The debate surrounding the release of the Epstein files and public cases, such as that of convicted rapist Dominique Pelicot, have reignited calls for accountability around the widespread sexual exploitation and abuse of women and girls. Jackson Katz offers a refreshingly candid diagnosis of this problem and outlines a series of actionable steps for men, women and everyone. These include concrete measures that "bystanders" can take to interrupt misogynistic abuse, as well as practical suggestions for men in positions of cultural influence and community, institutional, and political leadership.

Every Man is a call for men to be proactive leaders, to dismantle the attitudes and systems that enable gender violence, and to help build a society in which gender equity and safety are seen as both a shared responsibility and a national priority.

Critical Reviews

"Gaining the ability and confidence to interrupt sexist behavior from men is the main purpose of Katz's book ... a practical toolkit for men to think about ways in which they can challenge difficult behavior" --The Guardian

"Refreshing ... Katz is someone who cares as much about men as we feminists do about women, and reading his book - which is clearly set out as a call to action, more men might be inspired to join him" --The Telegraph

"Unflinchingly honest, Every Man equips men with the tools to become true allies. Katz doesn't offer empty promises or performative gestures; instead, he lays out the concrete actions every man can take to help dismantle gender violence. This is the handbook our culture so desperately needs." --Jameela Jamil, activist and actress

"Jackson's pioneering work has been at the forefront of our field for decades. The clarity of his message has informed and empowered me and countless other educators and advocates. With Every Man, he's taking his ideas and call to action to a much wider audience. This compelling book is not just about every man, it's for every man!" --Don McPherson, former NFL quarterback and member of the College Football Hall of Fame, and author of You Throw Like a Girl: The Blind Spot of Masculinity

"Engaging, smart, moving, Every Man clearly shows us guys why it is in our own best interests to take a stand against violence to the women we love and then exactly how best to do it. Katz's beautiful writing is at once broad reaching, personal, and supremely practical. Read it and change your life. You'll be grateful you did." --Terrence Real, New York Times bestselling author of Us, The New Rules of Marriage, and I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression

"Jackson Katz has been a valued partner of our diverse women-led organization for years, especially in our high-profile and award-winning "Be More than a Bystander" program -- a longstanding collaboration between us and the BC Lions professional football club. Jackson has a rare gift for building bridges between the feminist violence prevention community and more traditional sectors of male culture. Every Man captures this beautifully. It's filled with practical steps and a critical invitation to men: that they can and must be part of the solution." --Ninu Kang, Executive Director, Ending Violence Association of British Columbia

"I crossed paths with Jackson Katz in the early 2000s when we served together for several years on a Department of Defense Task Force on Domestic Violence. His passion and energy were clear to me then, and I'm thrilled that his new book captures that for readers today. He's recognized worldwide as a leading expert on how to reduce violence against women. This captivating and compelling book should be read by everyone...especially men." --Major General Craig Whelden, U.S. Army (retired)

"If every man who loves or has ever cared about me had had this book to read, my precious 7-year-old self and adult woman's psyche would be having other adventures, rather than still healing from male sexual violence and the complex trauma it has caused. Jackson has helped my path by inviting men who remain silent -- or downplay other men's hostilities and aggressions toward girls and women -- into leadership roles. In proven ways that are practical, direct, and applicable anywhere and anytime, including within one's own head and heart. Men can influence other men and boys in ways we simply cannot. Every Man shows how." --Ashley Judd, humanitarian, author, actor

"If Black people alone could have ended white supremacy, trust me, it would be long gone. Similarly, if violence against women could be ended by women only, this vital book would have been unnecessary. Jackson Katz deftly points out the harm men experience when violence against women is ignored or minimized. He shows how men can recover their souls and their integrity by working to end it. Every Man should be on the reading list of everyone who desires a more peaceful and just world." --Loretta J. Ross, author of Calling In: How to Start Making Change with Those You'd Rather Cancel

"I'm a retired police officer who has responded to, investigated, and worked to prevent gender-based violence for more than four decades. I'm also a survivor of childhood domestic abuse. In Every Man, Jackson Katz has given us a guide for how to educate, lead and mentor our sons, brothers and friends on a journey of cultural transformation. We owe it to the women and men in our lives to absorb and share Jackson's vision of equality and freedom from fear. In a perfect world, every man would own a copy of Every Man." --Detective Lieutenant (ret) Mark Wynn, Nashville Metropolitan Police Department
