Quilliam the Porcupine was a good student, friend, and a hard worker. He was also good at sports. His only problem was that he had a bad temper. He clenched his teeth and fists when something went wrong, and he got red in the face and shook when he was angry. Last week Quilliam was getting ready for school and he found out his favorite cereal was gone. He was red-faced and shaking when he arrived at school. His favorite crayon broke into half before he finished coloring his picture and things got worse when his friend Punk sprayed his skunk stink all over him on the car ride home. He had a bad day and when he reached home, though his bathwater got cold, his bad temper got hot. Quilliam knew he had to do something with his temper and he thought about what could make him calm. He started practicing the skills every night all week. What happened when his skills were put to test? Would Quilliam be able to calm down?

Quilliam Learns to Control His Temper: A Punk and Friends Book by Misty Black speaks about anger management and how to tackle anger in a way that is easy for children to understand and practice. The illustrations are adorable and they make the concept clear and breathe life into the story and characters. I like the portrayal of Quilliam's character and there will be many young readers who will find him real and relatable. It is a good story for parents and tutors to help children who have anger issues by trying out the skills Quilliam used.
