Quiet Coup: Neoliberalism and the Looting of America
With the nation lurching from one crisis to the next, many Americans believe that something fundamental has gone wrong. Why aren't college graduates able to achieve financial security? Why is government completely inept in the face of natural disasters? And why do pundits tell us that the economy is strong even though the majority of Americans can barely make ends meet? In The Quiet Coup, Mehrsa Baradaran, one of our leading public intellectuals, argues that the system is in fact rigged toward the powerful, though it wasn't the work of evil puppet masters behind the curtain. Rather, the rigging was carried out by hundreds of (mostly) law-abiding lawyers, judges, regulators, policy makers, and lobbyists. Adherents of a market-centered doctrine called neoliberalism, these individuals, over the course of decades, worked to transform the nation--and succeeded.
They did so by changing the law in unseen ways. Tracing this largely unknown history from the late 1960s to the present, Baradaran demonstrates that far from yielding fewer laws and regulations, neoliberalism has in fact always meant more--and more complex--laws. Those laws have uniformly benefited the wealthy. From the work of a young Alan Greenspan in creating "Black Capitalism," to Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell's efforts to unshackle big money donors, to the establishment of the "Law and Economics" approach to legal interpretation--in which judges render opinions based on the principles of right-wing economics--Baradaran narrates the key moments in the slow-moving coup that was, and is, neoliberalism. Shifting our focus away from presidents and national policy, she tells the story of how this nation's laws came to favor the few against the many, threatening the integrity of the market and the state.
Some have claimed that the neoliberal era is behind us. Baradaran shows that such thinking is misguided. Neoliberalism is a failed economic idea--it doesn't, in fact, create more wealth or more freedom. But it has been successful nevertheless, by seizing the courts and enabling our age of crypto fraud, financial instability, and accelerating inequality. An original account of the forces that have brought us to this dangerous moment in American history, The Quiet Coup reshapes our understanding of the recent past and lights a path toward a better future.

Great Balancing ACT: An Insider's Guide to the Human Vestibular System
What's the secret to keeping your balance? The ear does more than hear: it helps us stay stable by perceiving movements and gravity. Elegant sensors deep within the skull detect every twist, turn, and tumble, powering swift reflexes that keep vision and balance steady. This is the vestibular system. It's primordial and ubiquitous: every animal has one, and even plants have a rudimentary version. It works so well that we take it for granted--until it fails. How does this remarkable system function? What happens when it goes haywire? How can modern medicine treat vestibular disease?
The Great Balancing Act tells the story of the vestibular system, from T. rex hearing organs to cochlear implants, and from the unsung power of hair cells to inner-ear problems in outer space. Combining neuroscience, history, and medicine, Jeffrey D. Sharon--a vestibular doctor and researcher--explains the sense of balance using accessible language and wry humor. He recounts how pioneering scientists solved the mysteries of the vestibular system and shows why it is necessary for spatial reasoning and abstract thought. Sharon explores the devastating consequences of vestibular problems such as vertigo, dizziness, and imbalance, offering an expert, patient-friendly look at emerging and future treatments. Engaging and entertaining, this book invites readers to discover a little-known yet vital part of ourselves. -

Abbreviate
A small collection of small essays, Abbreviate examines how the injustices and violences of girlhood lead women to accept-and even claim-small spaces and stories. In lyric flash prose, Sarah Fawn Montgomery shares a girlhood shaped by neglect and abuse from adults and saved through the communal care of fierce female friends. The essays in this collection probe the girlhood play of Polly Pocket and planetariums, strobe with a 90's sleepover blacklight illuminating teenage magic, and ricochet with the regret and rage of adult women whose lives have been constellated by harm. Full of stars and scars, Abbreviate examines what happens when girls and women are haunted by hunger and self-erasure, asking us to reconsider the space we make for our secrets, shames, and selves.

Renewable Energy: A Very Short Introduction
Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring Energy is vital for a good standard of living, and affordable sources of power that do not cause climate change or pollution are crucial. Renewable energy is recognised as providing the answer, with countries from around the world deciding at COP28 in 2023 to aim to triple the global renewable energy capacity by 2030, for the transition away from fossil fields to be on track for net-zero emissions by 2050. This Very Short Introduction describes the main sources of renewable energy- solar PV, wind, hydropower, and biomass - their innovative technologies, and what each could deliver. It also discusses the relatively small contributions expected from tidal, wave, geothermal, and nuclear power, and from carbon capture and storage. Nick Jelley presents how the variability of solar PV and wind power can be handled in an electricity grid predominantly powered by renewables, and discusses recent innovations in batteries and other energy storage technologies. Jelley goes on to explain the importance of decarbonising the huge global heat demand by using heat pumps, hydrogen from electrolysers, and electricity directly; and of changing to electric vehicles, which will decarbonise most of transport. Electrification of buildings, industry and transport for net-zero will roughly triple the supply of electricity, and this can be met predominantly by solar PV and wind power. The learning effect has resulted in a dramatic drop in the price of wind and solar PV power in the last decade, making them the cheapest generators of electricity in most parts of the world. This could make powering the world by renewables considerably cheaper than continuing to burn fossil fuels. Jelley explores the challenges in achieving this; notably, geopolitical tensions, lack of grid infrastructure, permitting (planning) issues, the availability of finance in the global South, and the vested interests in fossil fuels. The Very Short Introduction ends by discussing the actions needed that include strong consistent policies, financial initiatives to take advantage of the long-term benefits of renewables, and good community involvement. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. From Shiva to Schrödinger: Unravelling Cosmic Secrets with Trika Shaivism & Quantum Insights
From Shiva to Schrödinger offers a revelatory journey into the teachings of Trika Shaivism and their remarkable alignment with the discoveries of modern quantum physics. This thought-provoking book demonstrates how the profound insights of this ancient spiritual tradition predate and parallel the concepts emerging from the cutting-edge world of quantum mechanics.
With clarity and depth, the author illustrates how the Trika Shaivism philosophy anticipated many of the important discoveries that modern physicists are just beginning to comprehend. He delves into the heart of both ancient spirituality and contemporary science to showcase how concepts like non-duality, the interconnectedness of all existence, and the illusion of separation resonate powerfully with the latest scientific theories of entanglement, quantum superposition, and the observer effect.
All in all, From Shiva to Schrödinger is not just a bridge between ancient wisdom and contemporary insights; it is a beacon illuminating the path to a deeper understanding of our universe and ourselves. So, whether you are drawn to spiritual inquiry or scientific discovery, this book offers a transformative perspective that will enrich your contemporary quest for knowledge.
