Nothing to Attain: Zen Stories of Faith and Understanding
An exploration of the Zen Buddhist path through classic stories of the tradition--from the esteemed Zen teacher Reb Anderson. We all fully possess the wisdom and virtues of the buddhas. This is our original nature. It is completely pure and always accessible, but because of misconceptions and attachments we do not realize it. In the great Buddhist text the Lotus Sutra, there is a striking parable that expresses this idea. A child leaves his home village and becomes a destitute young man. Years later, he comes upon his father, who has moved to a new city and become quite wealthy--but he doesn't recognize him. His father, however, recognizes the son, and sees his potential to become a great man. Slowly, his father trains him in the ways of maintaining the household, and slowly, the son gains confidence in himself. One day, having witnessed the son's growth in character, his father tells him, "From now on, you and I are to be no different." He reveals the truth of their family bond and bequeaths all his wealth to his son. We already are what we most deeply yearn for, and yet we need training to recognize this truth--such is the essence of the Zen spiritual path. Informed by a lifetime of practice, this mature reflection explores key aspects of Zen training--including the guidance of the teacher, the taking of precepts, the study of the mind, and the cultivation of compassion--through the lens of the parable of the destitute son. With insightful reflections on additional Zen stories, as well as the author's own life stories and memories of such legendary teachers as Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and Daini Katagiri Roshi, Nothing to Attain offers readers a new way of looking at their own spiritual path--not as a journey to a foreign destination but as a homecoming to the place we've always belonged. -

Voces del Pueblo: Artists of the Levantamiento Chicano in New Mexico
Long overdue art catalog for the New Mexican Chicano movement of the 1970s. Vibrant art by activist Chicanx creatives fills an enormous gap in the history of art from the movement that blossomed in the 1960s and 1970s. The decade between 1970 and 1980 marks an important period in the Chicana and Chicano Movement in New Mexico known simply as the movimiento. Artists from all over the state played important roles in the movement by providing art, participating in political discourse, and organizing actions. However, while some activists and organizers, such as Dolores Huerta, are known and celebrated nationally, most of these artists have gone unrecognized. Not only have they been overlooked in the art history and discourse of New Mexico, they have also gone unrecognized in the discussion of Chicano art history nationally. Voces del Pueblo begins to repair this gap in the history of the Chicana and Chicano art movement. Printed in color and black and white, the book showcases nearly two hundred images, including work by six New Mexico artists as well as historical photos of the movement. Readers will also find interviews with each of these artists and contextualizing essays by the cocurators of the National Hispanic Cultural Center exhibit, Ray Hernández-Durán and Irene Vásquez, as well as scholars, such as Phillip B. (Felipe) Gonzales, Howard Griego, and Sonja Elena Gandert. The result is an incomparable look at art history in New Mexico and the importance of New Mexican artists in the Chicana and Chicano Movement. -
Worst Fishing Dog Ever: And Other Essays
A heartfelt look at the state of modern fly-fishing and the challenges fishers will face in the coming decades. Ron Dungan, like many fly-fishers, can be obsessive. Although decades of fishing trips have led him to encounter snakes, bears, and treacherous terrain, his main focus is always the fish--how to find them, how to outsmart them, and how to hook them. In twenty-seven essays, Dungan takes us on a journey down bad roads and backcountry streams. Each tells a tale about fishing but also about hunting dogs, death, public-land policy, the trap of materialism, and accelerating environmental damage. This last becomes a new obsession. Fly-fishing in the arid Southwest has always been precarious, but how has fly-fishing changed, and what further impacts will climate change and resource extraction have? With his dog curled at his feet, Dungan attempts to unravel the tangled line of these hard questions. -

Electric Shamans at the Festival of the Sun
National Book Award finalist Mónica Ojeda returns with a blazing, psychedelic novel about girlhood, violence, and the loss of innocence. In the near future, best friends Noa and Nicole flee their home in Guayaquil, Ecuador to attend the Solar Noise Festival, a week-long, retro-futuristic gathering at the foot of an active volcano. While Noa fully embraces the haze of narcotics and hedonism in an effort to obscure her true reason for attending, Nicole senses something darker at play behind the festival's so-called "celebration of life." Amid technoshamanic poetry, collective hallucinations, and ritualistic dances, each girl navigates her own path in an effort to escape her past and reclaim her right to a future. Vivid, terrifying, and celebratory, Electric Shamans at the Festival of the Sun blends the primal with the supernatural, solidifying Mónica Ojeda as one of the most singular and exciting voices in Latin American and world literature today. -

How to Thrive at College: A Guide to the Ups and Downs of Mental Health on Campus
A Senior University Psychiatrist and TED Speaker Gives Students and Families the Knowledge, Skills, and Confidence to Identify, Solve, and Prevent the Common Pitfalls of the College Years In her New York Times op-eds, Mathilde Ross, MD charms parents with down-to-earth perspective, empowering messages, and wry wit. Now, with How to Thrive at College, Ross distills the lessons from her two-decade career in college mental health, clearing up public confusion on the subject of mental health on campus. By inviting readers behind her office door at Boston University-to sit with students, as she meets with them over the course of a calendar year-her book: - Illustrates the major forces that impact the mental health of young people. Some are obvious and some are not; some are downright funny; most are getting no attention in the media. - Restores confidence for those parents doing it right. If you've been a decent parent for 18 years, the reward is knowing your adult children can handle whatever life throws at them. - Nudges the public discussion of mental health in a more helpful direction, by increasing understanding and offering pragmatic solutions, as opposed to fanning the flames of anxiety. College is a rewarding time to learn and develop into an adult. How to Thrive at College will be an evergreen guide to students embarking on "the best four years" of their lives, and for their nail-biting parents at home. -

Sold outYes, Chef: A Romance Novel
The Bear meets It Happened One Summer in this delicious new romance from USA Today bestselling author Grace Reilly, in which a down-on-his-luck chef and a determined social media maven strike a reluctant deal to bring a beloved restaurant back to life.
If you can't take the heat...get out of the kitchen.
After a public meltdown in the dining room of one of Manhattan's most elite restaurants, Chef Jack Hartman is back in his South Florida hometown. Angry, grieving, and saddled with the unwanted storefront his late mentor left him, his life is spinning out of control. And that's before Poppy Winfield, the blond, bubbly, utterly infuriating daughter of his former boss, shows up at his dock.
Poppy needs to escape. From her disapproving family, her horrible ex-boyfriend, and her reputation as someone who has never taken anything seriously. But more than that, she wants to prove herself--and she has just the plan to do it. Unfortunately, that plan involves Jack Hartman, the most arrogant, prickly, intimidating man she's ever had the pleasure of throwing a shrimp at.
She knows Jack is desperate to come back from his unceremonious firing, so she proposes a deal: working together to open a revamped version of his mentor's restaurant. He'll handle the menu, and she'll use her skill as a social media influencer to sell the hell out of its grand opening. If she and Jack can make the restaurant a success, it'll be an accomplishment no one can deny--and a ticket for them both to return to New York.
Jack is intrigued, but only on his terms: if Poppy's going to work for him, she must learn the ropes of the entire business. Including how to cook. From him.
As sparks fly both in and out of the kitchen and tensions reach a boiling point, Poppy and Jack are left wondering--could they be a perfect pairing? Or is this whole experiment a recipe for disaster?
