Lonely librarian June Jones has never left the sleepy English village where she grew up. Explorer's Gene: Why We Seek Big Challenges, New Flavors, and the Blank Spots on the Map

Explorer's Gene: Why We Seek Big Challenges, New Flavors, and the Blank Spots on the Map

New York Times-bestselling author of Endure Alex Hutchinson returns with a fresh, provocative investigation into how exploration, uncertainty, and risk shape our behavior and help us find meaning.

Off the beaten path, following unmarked trails, we are wired to explore. More than just a need to get outside, the search for the unknown is a primal urge that has shaped the history of our species and continues to mold our behavior in ways we are only beginning to understand. In fact, the latest neuroscience suggests that exploration in any form--whether it's trying a new restaurant, changing careers, or deciding to run a marathon--is an essential ingredient of human life. Exploration, it turns out, isn't merely a hobby--it's our story.

In this much-anticipated follow-up to his New York Times bestseller Endure, Alex Hutchinson refutes the myth that, in our fully mapped digital world, the age of exploration is dead. Instead, the itch to discover new things persists in all of us, expressed not just on the slopes of Everest but in the ways we work, play, and live. From paddling the lost rivers of the northern Canadian wilderness to the ocean-spanning voyages of the Polynesians to the search for next-generation quantum computers, The Explorer's Gene combines riveting stories of exploration with cutting-edge insights from behavioral psychology and neuroscience, making a powerful case that our lives are better--more productive, more meaningful, and more fun--when we break our habits and chart a new path.

    Bloodmercy

Selected by Nicole Sealey as the winner of the 2025 APR/Honickman First Book Prize, Bloodmercy is a must-read debut that reimagines the tale of Cain and Abel as sisters.

"Violence is a failure of communication" opens this book as an omen and foregrounds a family exiled from Eden. In I.S. Jones's stunning and evocative debut collection, Cain and Abel are reimagined as sisters whose care for each other becomes increasingly fraught-the siblings vicious as they vie for the attention of a negligent father. Parallel to this, their bodies budding within and against the still-forming landscape, the girls navigate the shame of Eve's sin while coming into their own sexuality.

Grounded in the remote natural world, enclosed by firs and redwoods, Bloodmercy follows Cain and Abel through the dense geography of girlhood into young womanhood. Along the way, they discover the limits of power and control, spite and sex, faith and death, and man's dominion over the earth. Found in the space between the Old Testament and the modern world, the girls gaze heavenward and pose enduring questions to God. Lyrical, lush, and bursting with tender imagination, Bloodmercy marks a debut to watch.

Most Awful Responsibility: Truman and the Secret Struggle for Control of the Atomic Age

"I thought I knew the story but learned much that I didn't know. Outstanding!"-- Richard Rhodes

"This is historical research at its best." -- Dan Carlin
President Truman's choice to drop the atomic bomb is the most debated decision in the 20th Century. But what if Truman's actual decision wasn't what everyone thinks it was?
The conventional narrative is that American leaders had a choice: Invade Japan, which would have cost millions of Allied and Japanese lives, or instead, use the atom bomb in the hope of convincing Japan to surrender. Truman, the story goes, carefully weighed the pros and cons before deciding that the atomic bomb would be used against Japanese cities, as the lesser of two evils.
But nuclear historian Alex Wellerstein argues that is not what happened.

Not only did Truman not take part in the decision to use the bomb, but the one major decision that he did make was a very different one -- one that he himself did not fully understand until after the atomic bomb was used. The weight of that decision, and that misunderstanding, became the major reason that atomic bombs have not been used again since World War II.
Based on a close reading of the historical record, The Most Awful Responsibility shows that, despite his reputation as an ardent defender of the atomic bomb, Truman:

    • Wanted to avoid the "murder" and "slaughter" of innocent civilians
    • Believed that the atomic bomb should never be used again
    • Hoped that nuclear weapons would be outlawed in his lifetime

Wellerstein makes a startling case that Truman was possibly the most anti-nuclear American president of the twentieth century, but his ambitions were strongly constrained by the domestic and international politics of the postwar world and the early Cold War. This book is a must-read for all who want to truly understand not only why the bomb was dropped on Japan but also why it has not been used since.

Henry V: The Astonishing Triumph of England's Greatest Warrior King

"Ambitious... With meticulous research and in lively style, Jones presents us with the man beyond the Shakespeare character."--The New York Times

"The best biography yet of England's greatest king."--Simon Sebag Montefiore, author of The Romanovs and Jerusalem

The New York Times bestselling author returns with a biography examining the dramatic life and unparalleled leadership of England's greatest medieval king

Henry V reigned over England for only nine years and four months and died at the age of just thirty-five, but he looms over the landscape of the late Middle Ages and beyond. The victor of Agincourt, he is remembered as the acme of kingship, a model to be closely imitated by his successors. William Shakespeare deployed Henry V as a study in youthful folly redirected to sober statesmanship. For one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, "the greatest man who ever ruled England."

For Dan Jones, Henry V is one of the most intriguing characters in all medieval history, but one of the hardest to pin down. He was a hardened, sometimes brutal warrior, yet he was also creative and artistic, with a bookish temperament. He was a leader who made many mistakes, who misjudged his friends and family, but he always seemed to triumph when it mattered. As king, he saved a shattered country from economic ruin, put down rebellions, and secured England's borders; in foreign diplomacy, he made England a serious player once more. Yet through his conquests in northern France, he sowed the seeds for three generations of calamity at home, in the form of the Wars of the Roses.

Henry V is a historical titan whose legacy has become a complicated one. To understand the man behind the legend, Jones first examines Henry's years of apprenticeship, when he saw the downfall of one king and the turbulent reign of another. Upon his accession in 1413, he had already been politically and militarily active for years, and his extraordinary achievements as king would come shortly after, earning him an unparalleled historical reputation. Writing with his characteristic wit and style, Jones delivers a thrilling and unmissable life of England's greatest king.

    --Entertainment Weekly

The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman's act of violence against her husband--and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.

Alicia Berenson's life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London's most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations--a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

A twisting examination of life under late capitalism and the deceptions we inhabit to invent our own success stories.

Ben just lost his job, but he won't fess up to his wife Tara. Instead, while he claims to be going to work, he's actually devoting his time to auditioning for the wildly popular reality TV show Big Shot, where he'll be able to pitch his unique entrepreneurial idea. Meanwhile, Tara is lying to the parents of the children at her day care, turning in fabricated accounts of the kids' daily activities. And Marcy, the producer of Big Shot, has told her coworkers she's taking some time to "unplug," the better to avoid explaining her real reasons for getting away from the office . . .

Lies are the air True Failure's characters breathe: lies to themselves and lies to others, lies that comfort and confound. In this extraordinary novel, worthy of a place alongside the work of Joy Williams and Charles Portis, Alex Higley pokes a hole in the greatest and most perfidious lie of our time--that we are all either successes or failures in life--with warmth, wit, and wounding observation.

    Lullaby for the Grieving

With previous work hailed by the New York Times as "unflinching" and "piercing", Ashley M. Jones's Lullaby for the Grieving is her most personal collection to date.

In her fourth poetry collection, Jones studies the multifaceted nature of grief: the personal grief of losing her father, and the political grief tied to Black Southern identity. How does one find a path through the deep sorrow of losing a parent? What wonders of Blackness have to be suppressed to make way for "progress"?

Journeying through landscapes of Alabama, the Middle Passage and Underground Railroad, interior spaces of loss and love, and her father's garden, Jones constructs both an elegy for her father and a celebration of the sacred exuberance and audacity of life. Featuring poems from her tenure as Alabama's first Black and youngest Poet Laureate, Lullaby for the Grieving finds calm in unimaginable storms and attempts to listen for the sounds of healing.

From the bestselling author of Parents Weekend, comes one of the most anticipated thrillers of the year.

Today became an anniversary they would never celebrate.

One fateful night in 1992, Jules and Quinn's lives are changed and intertwined forever. Quinn Riley, a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, is arrested after he innocently tries to break up a fight but ends up nearly killing someone. Jules Delaney, high school royalty, survives an attack by the elusive and terrifying May Day Killer--a predator who strikes every May 1st in small Midwestern towns.

A year later, Jules is struggling with trauma and guilt, tormented by the question: Why was I spared? Quinn is newly released from juvenile detention and returns home to fresh heartbreak: the unsolved murder of his mother.

Over the next decade, their lives are revisited on a single day each year, May 1st. As secrets unravel and the paths of Quinn and Jules converge, two mysteries edge closer to the truth. All the while, the May Day Killer is still out there--and the clock is racing toward another anniversary.

Twisty, high-concept, and emotionally charged, this novel is an utterly compelling story of the hunt for a serial killer. But it's also a heartfelt--and heartrending--novel about fate, innocence lost, and two souls who find that sometimes being broken is the only way for the light to get in. The Anniversary reaffirms Finlay as one of the leading thriller writers today.

    Parasocial

In the middle of the pandemic, a fading genre-TV actor--fresh from his long-running series' cancellation--collides with an obsessive fan at a Texas convention. When she lures him to her home, he'll have to put on the greatest performance of his life simply to survive until morning. Unless, of course, he's the real monster...

Bestselling, critically-acclaimed Dracula, Motherf**Ker! duo Alex de Campi (Archie vs. Predator, Kat & Mouse) and Erica Henderson (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Jughead) reunite for another stylish horror reinterpretation, this time the psychosexual thriller.

    Early praise for Parasocial:

"De Campi and Henderson follow the success of their reimagining of vampire mythology, Dracula, Motherf**ker!, with a stylish psychosexual thriller examining the dynamic between celebrities and their fans... De Campi's fast-paced script takes increasingly exciting twists while posing provocative questions about what celebrities owe to those who place them on a pedestal. Henderson varies her line quality and color palette from one scene to the next to evoke layers of subtext and depth of character as the story builds to its intense climax. VERDICT A provocative and harrowing thriller with a distinct and passionately expressed perspective on the modern world." --Library Journal (Starred Review)

"A horrifyingly compelling portrait of loneliness and obsession." --Sarah Gailey, bestselling author of Just Like Home, The Echo Wife

"...Captures the general strangeness of conventions...The fickle nature of fandom, and the mercenary relationship between actor and audience, is shown through authentic-looking social media postings and text messages, giving the conflict between Lily and Luke a convincing, claustrophobic background. Luke and Lily are complex characters, and their interactions, both verbal and physical, are tense and exciting... The book uses bold colors and expert linework to convey literal images, but also moods and attitudes... Parasocial is the gripping graphic novel in which a minor celebrity is taken hostage by a fan." --Foreword Reviews

"Loved it. Misery in the social media age is the obvious reference, but it's smarter in its refusal to put creatives on a pedestal and dwells on our performances and the way we fail to see one another. It's also got a playful, petrifying approach to the medium, with a real understanding of the impressionistic effect of cartooning line, expert integrating of media... If you liked The Wicked + The Divine, you should be all over this." --Kieron Gillen

"Does Parasocial look good? It sure does... the finished product is a true thing of beauty. There's an intentional contrast between the constant insertion of digital text, be it in the form of tweets, DMs, actual text messages. All the ways we leave trails across the digital landscape. They're butting against the art, defined throughout by Henderson's supple, organic line." --The Comics Journal

"Holy shit, this book fucking rocks! It's rough as hell, but also tenderly real, like a fresh bruise. From the playlist to the characters, colors, and panels, Parasocial is this generation's Misery" -Vita Ayala

"An incredible piece of comic booking. It's stellar." -Kyle Starks

"De Campi and Henderson are electrifying creators" -Nadia Shamma
